Peony Bouquet

Peonies are in season here in Hawke’s Bay.  While my husband & I were out last weekend, we passed by a roadside flower stall on Havelock Road.  Their flowers were fresh cut and irresistible.  So I happily purchased 2 bunches of their short stemmed peonies.  Over the next week I enjoyed watching them open.  It was my first peony bouquet.  What a treat!  I’m sure there will be many more in my future!

Sunset Sunday #10

Did you see this fiery sunset a couple of weeks ago?  It lit up the whole sky with a lava glow and it lasted quite a while.  It has been a while since I’ve seen such a dramatic sunset over Westshore.  It was such a surprise, since it looked so gray & clouded over just moments before the sun set.

Spring Colour

We’ve had such a mild, dry winter that for some flowers, spring started much earlier than normal this year.  Last week I visited Clive Square with a friend of mine and discovered a little patch of anemones.  At first the patch looked a bit sparse & uninteresting.  But once I sat down and viewed them at their level, a whole other world appeared.  Their vibrant colours were captivating.  The Napier city gardeners do such a wonderful job planting the CBD.

Exhibit with HBPS at Princess Alexandra

At the beginning of August, I participated in the Hawke’s Bay Photographic Society’s Exhibit held & hosted by Princess Alexandra.  It was the Club’s largest Exhibit to date.  There were over 70 images displayed from about 25 photographers.  I displayed 6 prints, 2 in custom frames & 4 matted.  I also introduced 20 Note Card designs (a new product!).

Although it was the same weekend that a major winter storm hit Napier causing a 4 hour power outage, it was well attended & a great experience.  I especially enjoyed talking with the visitors who came by to view the exhibit.

Lastly, I want to say “thank you” to each of you who purchased my work!  It is so nice to meet the new owners of my prints & hear about why you are attracted to certain images & where you plan to hang them!

Portraits aren’t just for Young People

Recently I had the opportunity to have a Portrait Session with my aunt.  It is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.  So my last trip to San Diego, my aunt & I set a date, I scouted out a nice location & we made it happen!  Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?

My aunt is 94 and is doing well.  I am so happy to now have lovely images of her.  Of how she is right now.  I know these images will only gain more importance to me as time moves forward.

Why is it, that at a certain point in our lives we seem to stop having our portrait taken?  Portraits aren’t just for children, teens & young families.  I enjoy photographing adults of all ages.  When was the last time you had your portrait taken?

There is no time like the present to have your portrait taken!

After the Party is Over

After the party is over what to do have?  Lots of images, I hope!

I covered a great birthday celebration a couple of weekends ago that was held at the East Pier Hotel in Ahuriri.  I’m sure it took months of planning to coordinate all the event details.  Many of the guests flew in special for the event, from all around New Zealand and from overseas.

Since I was there with my camera, they could relax & enjoy the party.  Now that the party is over, they now have the images to enjoy for years to come.

Ahuriri Property with a Lovely View

The Property Owner called me with a problem.  Her advertising wasn’t really showing Buyers how beautiful her views actually are.  “Could I come & provide her the images that would entice a Buyer to come out and view the property? ”  Happy to!

Lucky us, the weather for the last couple days has been stunning.  With a view like this, a sunset image is a must-have!

5 Fun Facts About Black Swans

Swans are not something you see where I grew up in California.  Here in Hawke’s Bay they are a common sight.  I admire their elegance & really enjoy watching them.    After doing a little research, I found five fun facts about Black Swans:

  1. Before European explorers had reached Australia, it was believed that all swans were white. Dutch mariner, Antounie Caen, was the first to be amazed at the sight of Australia’s Black swans on the Shark Bay in 1636.  (per svswans.com)
  2. Black Swans mate for life and reunite every year to breed.  (per perthzoo.wa.gov.au)
  3. A nest is reused every year, restored or rebuilt as needed. Both parents share the care of the nest.   (per Wikipedia)
  4. Black swans, like many other water fowl, lose all their flight feathers at once when they moult after breeding and they are unable to fly for about a month(per Wikipedia)
  5. Their life span is up to 40 years (per svswans.com)
