A Session at the Beach

This family portrait session was for a mother & her daughter.  When I asked where they would like their session to be, she said, “We are beach people!”  So I found a nice section of beach north of Bay View.  Happily the weather cooperated too.  It was so nice to capture a few memories for them, playing in the surf.

Sunset Sunday #10

Did you see this fiery sunset a couple of weeks ago?  It lit up the whole sky with a lava glow and it lasted quite a while.  It has been a while since I’ve seen such a dramatic sunset over Westshore.  It was such a surprise, since it looked so gray & clouded over just moments before the sun set.

Sunset Sunday #8

Last night’s sunset ended with an amazing pop of colour.  Plus there was an added bonus of a few nice waves coming into view & crashing into the rocks!  We haven’t had much wave action this past summer.

Sailing on Hawke’s Bay

A sunny summer’s day on Hawke’s Bay often makes the water look turquoise.  To find beautiful sailboats enjoying the day at the same time is a bonus!

Sunset Sunday #7

We’ve had lots of clouds in our sky lately.  This can be a really good thing if you are trying to photograph sunset.  Recently though, many an evening has passed without a interesting sunset.  This was taken on the 19th of January.  The special thing about this particular sunset was how still the air was.

There wasn’t even a hint of any wind this evening.

Sunset Sunday #6

Often sunsets last only a few minutes.  This sunset, on the other hand, seemed to linger long after it should have.  When I turned to leave, I realized it was practically dark!  It’s pretty rare for me to capture street lights in my sunset images.  The intensity of the pinks & reds was amazing.

Golden Winter Waves

Once in a while, we are lucky to have both waves & a strong northwesterly wind, which adds the wonderful back-spray.  To this add the golden light of sunset highlighting the wave break & a dusting of snow on the lower ranges.  All these elements came together for about 7 minutes!  But it made it worth being out in the cold wind.

Just Visiting

Look who came visiting here in Westshore. This baby NZ fur seal had been relaxing in the winter sunshine for a while. It’s coat was fuzzy & completely dry. It is such a treat to see animals out in nature.

The NZ Department of Conservation states: “New Zealand fur seals can be distinguished from sea lions by their pointy nose and smaller size. In New Zealand, fur seals also tend to be found on Rocky shorelines, whereas sea lions prefer sandy beaches.”

Summer Regattas on Hawke’s Bay

We are having an amazingly hot summer so far here at Hawke’s Bay.  Recently the Napier Sailing Club hosted a few sailing regatta’s.  It is great to watch the sail boats race their way across the bay.  When the sky is blue, the water looks almost turquoise which really makes the white sails pop!  I’ve added several summer images to my “On the Bay” series.  Here are a few examples:
