Peony Bouquet

Peonies are in season here in Hawke’s Bay.  While my husband & I were out last weekend, we passed by a roadside flower stall on Havelock Road.  Their flowers were fresh cut and irresistible.  So I happily purchased 2 bunches of their short stemmed peonies.  Over the next week I enjoyed watching them open.  It was my first peony bouquet.  What a treat!  I’m sure there will be many more in my future!

Spring Colour

We’ve had such a mild, dry winter that for some flowers, spring started much earlier than normal this year.  Last week I visited Clive Square with a friend of mine and discovered a little patch of anemones.  At first the patch looked a bit sparse & uninteresting.  But once I sat down and viewed them at their level, a whole other world appeared.  Their vibrant colours were captivating.  The Napier city gardeners do such a wonderful job planting the CBD.

5 Fun Facts About Black Swans

Swans are not something you see where I grew up in California.  Here in Hawke’s Bay they are a common sight.  I admire their elegance & really enjoy watching them.    After doing a little research, I found five fun facts about Black Swans:

  1. Before European explorers had reached Australia, it was believed that all swans were white. Dutch mariner, Antounie Caen, was the first to be amazed at the sight of Australia’s Black swans on the Shark Bay in 1636.  (per svswans.com)
  2. Black Swans mate for life and reunite every year to breed.  (per perthzoo.wa.gov.au)
  3. A nest is reused every year, restored or rebuilt as needed. Both parents share the care of the nest.   (per Wikipedia)
  4. Black swans, like many other water fowl, lose all their flight feathers at once when they moult after breeding and they are unable to fly for about a month(per Wikipedia)
  5. Their life span is up to 40 years (per svswans.com)

Art Deco Weekend in Napier Highlights from 2011-2015

Another Art Deco Weekend is upon us here in Napier.  It is an amazing spectacle.  The first time I witnessed it in 2007, I couldn’t really take it all in.  It brings people in from not only New Zealand, but from around the world.  Some vintage car enthusiasts even ship their precious automobiles over for the occasion!

The best part is how everyone is able to participate in it with just a little bit of effort put into dressing the part.  Napier’s CBD magically transforms into yesteryear, when you combine vintage cars along the streets, vintage planes overhead & everyone dressed like the 1930’s.

Needless to say, it is a photographers playground!  Most years, you will find me there with my camera along with everyone else.  If you ever thought “No one uses a camera anymore,” you haven’t been to Art Deco.  I always come home thinking the big camera companies would be thrilled to see all the gear that was out that day.

I’ve gone through my archive for the past 5 years & selected the highlights of the many images I’ve shot at Art Deco.  Most may be purchased as Wall Art.

The Art Deco Weekend Galleries include:  People & The Overall SceneAir Show – Vintage PlanesVintage Cars;  &  The Vintage Car Parade.

(Note:  If you are vintage car owner who participated, you don’t have to scroll through all the images, just put your license plate number into the Search Box.  Most car images have been labeled with a license plate number or an entry number.)

Sailing on Hawke’s Bay

A sunny summer’s day on Hawke’s Bay often makes the water look turquoise.  To find beautiful sailboats enjoying the day at the same time is a bonus!

A Nice Thing About Rain

I like going out & walking through my garden after it has rained.  It’s the little beads of water that the rain drops create on the leaves & flowers that are beautiful to see.  Sometimes they cling right to the edge of the petals & you wonder why they don’t just slip off.

So don’t let a little rain get you down, go out & explore!

Morning at the Marina in Ahuriri

I’ve added some new images to my Ahuriri Gallery. It was a beautiful morning at the marina. The reflections of the sail boats & pleasure craft just sat on top on the water.  Over a short period of time, the wind or tide started to create little ripples in the reflections.

Colourful Kayaks in Ahuriri

I was driving by Pandora Pond in Ahuriri, when I these punchy bright colours caught my eye.  The fun reflections were an added bonus!  Just minutes later, the kayaker class came to claim their boats & the glossy water was no more.

Brightly coloured kayaks lined up ready to be taken out by a class.

The Bennett’s Building

The other day I walked around Napier’s CBD, with a friend of mine, to look more closely at the wonderful Art Deco buildings.  We decided to focus just on architectural details .  When we got to the Bennett’s Building, I realized I’d never noticed it before.  (It is directly across from Farmer’s.)  The more I looked at it, the more I liked it.  I especially like how they’ve painted it to highlight the architectural details.

Golden Winter Waves

Once in a while, we are lucky to have both waves & a strong northwesterly wind, which adds the wonderful back-spray.  To this add the golden light of sunset highlighting the wave break & a dusting of snow on the lower ranges.  All these elements came together for about 7 minutes!  But it made it worth being out in the cold wind.
